The museum shows the system and biogeography of birds and mammals in Middle America. It is in Departamento de Biología Evolutiva inside of Facultad de Ciencias de la UNAM. The collection started in 1978 with 400 samples of birds and mammals, the product of two professional theses, however it has grown with time thanks to new research projects. It currently has collections of frozen tissues, eskeletons, prints, digitilized vocalisations, stomach contents and photographies. There are 85% of the taxons or groups involved with México.
It has 10,000 mammals samples correctly georeferenced with 200 especifically country specimens, which represents 42% total. Ectoparasites have also been collected, mainly fleas. Regarding birds, it consists of 18,000 specimens in skin and conservated in liquid, 1,000 skeletons, 800 stomach contents and some nests and eggs that come from all states of the country and United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba and Venezuela. The tissue collection is composed of 5,000 samples of Mexican birds and 2,500 mammals.
