On one side of the Plaza de Santo Domingo, lies Malinche's house, an indigenous woman who was baptized by the Spanish as Marina. Her role in the history of the Conquest is central because she was an interpreter and translator for Hernán Cortés and his entourage during the Spanish Conquest. After having fathered a child with her, who she named Martín Cortés, the conquistador married her to the Spanish captain, Juan Jaramillo, with whom she had her second daughter. Legend has it that the Malinche was going to testify in the trial against Hernán Cortés, accused of corruption; however, she could not get there because she was stabbed to death. Today the house is a primary school called Miguel Serrano school.
