in detail

The Casa de los Mascarones dates back to 1766 when the Spanish distributed plots of land for cultivation. It was intended as a country estate for Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. The house remained unfinished until 1822 when it was auctioned. It was a school with different names and owners until it was nationalized by Venustiano Carranza in 1914, and then became a school, the National School of Teachers, a summer school, music school and conservatoire, all at different times. Since 1929 it has been part of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. It is a branch of the Centro de Enseñanza de Lenguas Extranjeras which offers courses in English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese and Nahuatl.
