How to get

Paseo de la Reforma I Sección s/n, Col. Bosque de Chapultepec. 11100, Polanco-Chapultepec

in detail

The oldest urban park in the Americas. The Chapulín hill, also known as Chapultepec, has an ancient heritage full of multicultural diversity. Its name is owed to the fact that it was a water source. In pre-Hispanic times it was occupied by the Teotihuacan, Toltec and Mexica peoples, where Moctezuma, the “tlatoani” (emperor) of the Mexica, commissioned Nezahualcoyotl, governor of Tetzuco and a prominent architect, to build an aqueduct to bring water to Tenochtitlan, as well as ritual bathing houses, a botanical garden, and a zoo.

Continuing the site’s vocation, in 1530, under Spanish rule, Chapultepec was decreed as a leisure area. In 1785, construction began of the Viceregal Palace (Chapultepec Castle), which was home to Maximilian and Carlota, Porfirio Diaz, Francisco I. Madero, Venustiano Carranza and other presidents. It has been a defense, sacred site, observatory, history repository, and place of recreation.

It consists of 678 hectares spread over green areas and buildings. It is divided into three sections, in which you can find two artificial lakes, sports facilities, four fountains, six monuments, eight museums, a kiosk, a house of culture, the Chapultepec Zoo, a botanical garden, theaters, and many other attractions, making it a must-see for tourists and locals. It is not necessary to say that children will find a wide space to run, play and have fun outdoors enjoying nature. In addition to that, Chapultepec often holds special shows and activities suitable for every age.
