in detail

This church was built in the late nineteenth century. It is believed that it was built on a pre-Hispanic base and that the annexed cave -today a chapel- was a sacred place. In its interior one worships the dead Jesus Christ and the Lord of the Holy Burial. It is decorated with pilasters, gold capitoles and caissons and two chandeliers.

The church of the Señor del Calvario is the main church of Culhuacán. It is noted for its pre-Hispanic foundations and because it is next to a cave, where according to legend some workers found a glowing image of Christ, which they called El Señor del Calvario, over 200 years ago.

From that time the locals have made their religious supplications in this place, a landmark since the first cultures settled in Mesoamerica.
