in detail

Franz Mayer was a noted collector, photographer and philanthropist born in Germany who arrived in Mexico in 1905. In 1945 he was concerned about setting up a patronage and in 1963 a trust was formed at the Bank of Mexico to fund a museum to exhibit the more than 10,000 pieces that he managed to collect throughout his life, primarily antiquities and art.

The museum finally opened in 1986. In addition to the permanent rooms where the Mayer collections are exhibited, there are rooms where temporary exhibitions are held such as the World Press Photo exhibition each year, as well as exhibitions by international artists. At the same time spaces are rented out and educational activities, movie debates and the Mexican billboard and utilitarian pottery biennials are held. There are also summer workshops for children to learn about ornamental arts and design by applying this museum own thematics, such as narrations, theater, music and plastic arts.

The library has a vast collection of 14,000 works organized into: Old and rare books (15th to 18th centuries), Quixote collection (16th to 20th centuries), Convent collection (seventeenth to nineteenth centuries), Sheet music (sixteenth to nineteenth centuries), General collection (nineteenth to twentieth centuries), Periodicals and Catalogues .
