in detail

Located in the La Merced neighborhood, famous for its commercial origins from the classical period, in which all its streets were filled with shops.

In 1860 the permanent market was built on the former site of the La Merced Convent. In the early twentieth century it was the main market of Mexico City for wholesale and retail, until the Central de Abastos was opened south of the city.

In the 50s it was demolished and the new market by the architect Enrique del Moral was opened in 1957. Today it remains the largest traditional retail market in town with more than 4,000 shops full of popular products such as dried chillis, corn husks and bananas, national vegetables, meats, sweets and more.
