in detail

The National Museum of Cultures reports lifestyles, values, customs and beliefs of other cultures through their items. Here you can see an Egyptian sarcophagus, Chinese bronzes and sculptures, a Sumerian tablet, an Eskimo waterproof and a blanket from Alaska. The showrooms are organized into International, Pacific and Mediterranean, a sea of cultures and China.

It was one of the first museums to open in Mexico in 1965 and is one of the five national museums run by the National Institute of History and Anthropology of Mexico. Inside the mural Revolución forms part of the aesthetics of the building, it is a work by Oaxacan artist Rufino Tamayo dating from 1938.

Before becoming a museum it was the Real Casa de Moneda, established on May 11, 1535 by Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza. The mint remained in operation for two centuries. There parts as the piece of eight occurred. Because of its good quality and fine workmanship, the coins were originally silver, the first were known as Carlos and Juana, the names of the monarchs , and then after they were made in gold and bronze. The mint crossed international borders, its product was used in Western Europe, USA, Japan and China and was known as "Spanish dollar". Then it passed to the Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación and was a research center.

During "Museum Nights", films for kids may be shown so they can have their own space in this place.
