José Ma. Morelos #10, Col. Culhuacán. 09800, Culhuacán

in detail

Before the Spanish conquest, Culhuacan was a religious center very important for the Mexica, for water and fertility were worshiped here. In this place the Saint Agustine order built the former Culhuacan convent in 1607.

During the Viceroyalty period the Agustinian friars evangelized the indigenous population with images. The walls were built with volcanic stone and the paintings inside depict scenes of the life of Christ, a great example of how delicate and skillful the work of the indigenous painters or tlacuilos was. Now the site museum features six rooms in the cloister keeping the godess of corn cobs Chicomecoatl and a Tlaloc, god of rain, mask.
