in detail

The design of the building was led by the architects Teodoro González de León and Abraham Zabludovsky, and it is regarded as brilliant example of contemporary architecture. It was founded in 1981 and exhibits innovative collections of modern and contemporary international art.

The Tamayo Museum has formed part of a national museum network directed by the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) since 1986. The museum spans over more than 2,800 square meters of land and the building has almost twice that much floor space. The Tamayo collection is the main attraction here, along with traveling exhibitions from around the world. In 1989, in order to support the museum, Olga and Rufino Tamayo created the foundation that bears their names: Fundación Olga y Rufino Tamayo. The latter died a few years later, in 1991, leaving the museum in hands of an actors union has guaranteed the continuity of the project through the years, and it has helped to grow the offer of workshops. Children of different ages can visit the museum and not only contemplate art hosted in the building, but they could interpret and say the feeling that art evoke in them, as happens in the workshop Break the silence, inspired on one of the exhibits that has the mission to teach kids to express their feeling through painting and collage.
