in detail

On the 31st meeting of Unesco’s World Cultural Heritage Comittee, held in 2007 in Christchurch city, New Zealand, the Main Campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico was included in the list of World Cultural Heritage.

The reasons that led to this decision were that this place was a “monumental complex, example of the twentieth century Modernism ". It is a campus designed to be the university of the Mexican people. The declaration includes the main campus; inaugurated in 1952, and its more than fifty buildings.

The murals of Juan O'Gorman and Siqueiros stand out, as well as the relation between architecture and nature that the central campus keeps and obviously the solution developed by architects Mario Pani and Enrique del Moral. Here Funcionalism and Rationalism come to life, integrating the concept of pre-Hispanic squares with the architectonic trends of Modernism and Fucionalism.

The declaration includes the Olympic University Stadium, the sports fields and the school zone (Zona Escolar), including the buildings for Administration and Services, Human Sciences, Arts and Museums, Sciences and Biological Sciencies.
