in detail

One of the important aspects of the Cerro de la Estrella is that it was the site where the celebration of the New Fire was performed by the post-classic Mesoamerican societies when this place was called Huizachtécatl. The Mexica priests interpreted divine signals watching the constellations. Today part of the original structure where the celebration took place is still preserved.

The site consists of two structures. The most important one is the pyramid temple, while the second structure is a terrace where a four meter wide staircase stood. Likewise you can see the ceremonial and living spaces of the classical period, besides the early and late post-classic, thus it is estimated to have been inhabited at least 5000 years ago.

On the site were found more than 200 stones engraved with anthropomorphic faces, grooves and faces of Tlaloc, the rain god. In addition to the archaeological beauty, the hill is a protected area for its botanical richness, especially cacti, and hundreds of people walk along its paths, while paying tribute to history.
