Short of cash? Do not worry, you can thoroughly enjoy Mexico City on a shoestring. Here are 10 plans that won’t break the bank:

1. Stroll round the streets. Mexico City is the perfect place to walk. The most traditional streets of the Historic Center; Paseo de la Reforma; Av. Álvaro Obregon in the Colonia Roma, the epicenter of creativity; Ámsterdam and the whole of La Condesa

2. Check out the street markets. Every weekend, there are options for the curious: La Lagunilla, Álvaro Obregón, Cuauhtémoc...

3. Have a picnic in Chapultepec or in one of the city parks such as Los Dinamos or the Desierto de los Leones.

4. Use Sundays to go to museums, many of which are free of charge for Mexicans. Several are free for everyone, like the Palace of Fine Arts or the Soumaya.

5. Go to the movies. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Cineteca Nacional has special rates.

6. Read. The Vasconcelos Library is well worth a visit.

7. Learn to dance danzón at the weekend in Mexico Park or on Saturdays at noon in the Parque de la Ciudadela.

8. Eat in the markets. If you go to Coyoacán, try the famous tostadas (deep-fried tortillas with a topping) or go to the Mercado de Antojitos. Or discover the huge buffet available in the street and small establishments: Tlayudas (outsize tacos), tacos de canasta (potluck tacos), quesadillas (filled tacos), tortas ...

9. Do exercise in public parks. On Sundays, rent a bike and pedal your way down Reforma.

10. Go to Chapultepec Zoo. Admission free.
