Christmas in Mexico City

Christmas is a magical time for everyone. A time to remember others, give presents and celebrate with your family. Mexico City joins this festive spirit and is a perfect destination for spending these special holidays.

In Mexico City, Christmas officially begins with the lighting of the Christmas tree in Liverpool Insurgentes on the third Saturday in November. From then on, families begin to prepare for the holidays. Every house has a poinsettia, traditionally purchased in Xochimilco.

Paseo de la Reforma is festooned with poinsettias, where traditional Nativity scenes are set up and the avenue is decorated with Christmas lights in the evening. The center is decked out in all its finery, and the facades of palaces and historic buildings are decorated with lights. Businesses, large and small, compete to provide the most attractive decorations. All the shop windows are decorated with Christmas wreaths and paper lanterns. Christmas markets are set up, some very traditional, like the one organized in the  Coyoacan Market or the Grand Christmas Bazaar in the Lázaro Cardenas Market. The atmosphere is magical.

Thousands of people come to skate in the Zocalo, since a giant ice rink is provided for everyone to enjoy. Others rush to do their last-minute Christmas shopping. And everyone celebrates the traditional posadas with family and friends, singing litanies and breaking the piñata to get the party going.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are family occasions, unlike New Year when Mexico City residents go out to celebrate in the street. The most traditional place to welcome the new year is the Ángel de la Independencia.

Happy Holidays!
