Historic Center Festival

Every spring, the center of Mexico City gets decked out for one of the most important cultural events on the continent: the Historic Center Festival: Year after year, the world’s major performers stop off in the city to participate in this extraordinary festival of the arts. Jazz, classical music, movies, dance, literature, opera, philosophy, theater and children’s activities complement an agenda that runs between March and April each year.

The events are held in magical venues in the Historic Center: Santo Domingo Plaza, with its Baroque church and portals; the Palace of Fine Arts, the esplanade of the Monument to the Revolution, the Museum of the City of Mexico and the City Theater, among others.

A unique activity is organized as part of this festival: The Safari en Tepito, the so-called “tough neighborhood.” Tepito is known as a rough neighborhood. Safari en Tepito aims, through street theater, to offer participants an intimate experience of the neighborhood through actors and its inhabitants. The tour includes visits to certain dwellings and places that are the heart of the neighborhood, such as gyms, murals or markets. This is undoubtedly one of the most unusual experiences offered by Mexico City.

The Tepito Safari is an urban theater initiative to raise awareness of the sensitivities of marginal neighbourhoods among visitors. This fascinating article by the Historic Center Trust tells you all about this. Every year there are new editions of the Safari por Tepito. Find out when the next visits are scheduled and how to buy tickets on their Facebook page.

The groups are always escorted by the actors and residents who serve as guides. It's a good idea to wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Check with them before taking photos, always show respect and stay with the group so that you do not miss out any of the explanations.
