Live the Passion. Each day of Easter week, Iztapalapa revives the passion of Christ at the Cerro de la Estrella. A Via Crucis like no other in the city. Thousands participate in the representation and millions of Mexicans come each year to see this unique religious event, which is even televised on national TV.
You can not contain your excitement at seeing this display of fervor. Remain silent and participate as a spectator. All events narrated in the Gospels are staged: the Last Supper, Jude' betrayal, the trial, conviction, passion, via Crucis and the crucifixion ...
Story goes that Iztapalapa promised to represent Easter Week this way every year to thank God for sparing the village of a deadly epidemic in the 19th century. But also, t in pre-Hispanic times the Cerro de la Estrella was considered among the most sacred places, for it was here that the New Fire ceremony was held. A new cycle ensured that the sun would still rise every day. Alpha and Omega. Life, death and resurrection.
The Via Crucis begins in the Cuitláhuac park, passes through the neighborhood of Iztapalapa and climbs up to the Cerro de la Estrella.
