The bonechilling Island of the Dolls

An excursion that will keep you awake. Probably the grimmest boat ride you'll ever take.

This tour is long because the man who created the nightmare universe of the Island of the Dolls lived away from his people. Story goes that a woman drowned next to his island and he started hearing mourning and lamenting at night; so he decided to scare away her spirit with the dolls. Every time he went into town to sell the produce from his chinampa orchard, he collected all the broken dolls he found.

After the leisurely ride in the trajinera along canals and lakes with music, good food and enjoying the wonderful scenery, suddenly something alters our senses. As the trajinera approaches the island, we start seeing broken dolls, dolls hanging from trees keeping away not only the dead but the living too.

The piers where you can board the trajineras are Cuemanco next to Ecological Xochimilco Park; Fernando Celada at the entrance of the center; Caltongo, Salitre, San Cristobal, Belén y Belén de las Flores in the center, Nuevo Nativitas, Zacapa and Las Flores near to Nativitas.

At the boarding points, you will find all the information about tours on trajinera with their prices and duration.

During the month before the Day of the Dead, the La Llorona show is performed on an island, with a theatrical performance and fireworks. Check the dates.
