The Cerro de la Estrella: view point and fire

TOP EXPERIENCES · History, Parks, Traditional
Take 6 hours

A magnificent view of the city. A magical place for thousands of years. The Cerro de la Estrella is a unique space. A perfect National Park to escape the hustle and bustle for a few hours and breathe fresh air. The perfect place for hiking or cycling. A green lung with a fascinating history.

If you come with your family, the ecotourism area has a playground, barbecues and palm shelters for you to spend a day out on a picnic. But do not stay there. Climb to the top of Cerro de la Estrella and fall in love with the views. Now imagine what this magnificent view looked like 500 years ago without the city. Small settlements dotted here and there. Tenochtitlan in the background. Woods and orchards. Remember now that you are in a sacred place and approach the archaeological site.

The New Fire Temple. Here, every 52 years the ancient Aztecs celebrated the change of cycle, the Old Fire was extinguished and the New Fire was lit. They believed that if they did not light this New Fire, the world would be in darkness and everyone would die. The night of the ceremony people gathered in anticipation and expectation. The priests dressed as gods. Everything old was discarded, houses were cleaned and prepared for a new cycle. At midnight, the New Fire burned, everybody breathed a sigh of relief and celebrated that time would continue to take its course (at least for another 52 years).

If you're here in Easter week, be sure to attend the special celebration that residents of Iztapalapa perform in the Cerro de la Estrella.

Telescopes on the view point offer spectacular views over the city.

Bring appropriate clothing and footwear to be in the field and do not forget the sunscreen.
