The Great Temple of Tenochtitlan

Take 2 hours

It is no coincidence that the Cathedral is built on the Templo Mayor of ancient Tenochtitlan. When you stand today on the Zocalo you are in the main square of the pre-Hispanic metropolis. The main temple, the holiest place, was here. So when the old building was demolished and they peered at the first remains, expectations were high. You can visit this magnificent archaeological site in the heart of the city.

From the archaeological site, stop and consider where you are: The Cathedral on one side and the National Palace on the other. You are in the center of Tenochtitlan, where only priests and the elites could enter. In this ceremonial center, Tlaloc and Huitzilopochtli, the principal deities, rain and sun, the giver of life and the maximum forces of nature were worshipped. Alongside the excavations, the fascinating museum speaks of trade, agriculture, rituals and human sacrifices. Impressive.

There is an audio guide available in Spanish and English.

Take a break and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the archaeological site from the restaurants and cafes on the terraces of the buildings that surround it.

When walking around the center, note that the palaces have original pre-Hispanic reliefs. They were taken from the Mexican buildings such as the Templo Mayor.
