The footprints of Judaism

Take 1 hour

The beginnings of the flourishing Jewish colony in Mexico City go back to the beginning of the 20th century. During the first half of the century, Mexico welcomed families from Eastern Europe who went looking for a place to start a new life in freedom. On reaching Mexico City, they settled at the Historic Center. Around the streets such as Jesús María and Loreto and they began to set up shops and businesses with products from their countries of origin and of course, meeting places.

A Star of David engraved on the door tells you that you have reached the Justo Sierra Historical Synagogue that was, until the 50s, the meeting place of the Jewish community in the city. Inside, an exhibition of vintage photographs is a small window into the lives of these immigrants who arrived with nothing and found their niche very quickly in the social, economic and cultural life of the country.

Upstairs you will find the place of worship presided over by the Ark of the Torah. If the space reminds you of northern European architecture you're right: it was built to resemble a Lithuanian synagogue with a bright, warm room, two floors, and vividly painted ceilings.

This synagogue is open to the public for the dissemination of the history of the Jewish community in Mexico. You can enter freely, although a donation is requested. You can also take photos but always keep a respectful attitude; you are in a place of worship.

The most active synagogues in the city are in the Polanco neighborhood, where the Jewish community was established in the mid-20th century.
