Art and museums in Mexico City: how to choose

Mexico City is one of the cultural capitals of the continent, and that creates a practical problem: there is far too much of it. These 76 experiences exist to solve that decision —guided routes, workshops and itineraries that group several places into one outing— rather than leaving you in front of a catalogue of 168 museums.

Where to start, by interest. For muralism, the axis is the Palacio de Bellas Artes, the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso and the Secretaría de Educación Pública, all within walking distance in the Centro. For archaeology, the National Museum of Anthropology and the Templo Mayor are both essential and completely different: one is the context, the other is the site itself. For living art, the route changes —galleries in Roma and Juárez, the contemporary circuit in the south, and the university cultural centres.

The practical facts that shape a day. Almost everything closes on Monday. Sunday is free for Mexican residents, which fills the rooms. The famous artists' houses sell timed tickets days in advance. And a guide is genuinely worth it for muralism and archaeology, where without context you see half of what is there.

How to build the day. One major museum in the morning, a proper lunch, and something light in the afternoon —a gallery, a cultural centre, a square. Two major museums in one day is the fastest way to remember neither. See also our guide to the city's museums.
