What this section covers. Guided tours of Mexico City and excursions from it, sold as organised packages.
The day trips that leave the capital. Teotihuacán, normally combined with the Basilica of Guadalupe and Tlatelolco on the same northern axis. Puebla and Cholula, two hours east, with a World Heritage centre and the largest pyramid in the world by volume. Taxco and Cuernavaca to the south. Tepoztlán, the closest. And, from roughly November to March, the monarch butterfly sanctuaries — the one excursion genuinely worth booking rather than improvising.
Inside the city. The historic centre, Chapultepec and the museums, Xochimilco and Coyoacán, and the muralism circuit — which is the one where a specialist guide changes the experience most.
What to confirm before paying. What the price includes, especially site entrance fees and lunch; how many shopping stops the itinerary carries; the group size; the guide's language; and the real return time. For Teotihuacán, ask the departure hour: leaving before 08:00 is the difference between walking the Avenue of the Dead in shade and in full sun.
