What to see in Mexico City: where to start

This section gathers more than 2,600 places in Mexico City, sorted by category: museums, monumental Mexico, parks and the outdoors, markets, shopping, religious sites, viewpoints, zoos and a great deal more. It is a catalogue rather than a list of recommendations —the idea is that you filter by what interests you and by the part of the city you will actually be in.

The rule that saves the most time. Group by area, not by theme. The city is enormous and journeys take longer than you expect: one day in the Historic Centre, one in Chapultepec and Polanco, one in Coyoacán and San Ángel, one in Xochimilco. Doing two things at opposite ends of the city on the same day is the fastest way to spend an afternoon in traffic.

What to know before you plan. Almost every museum closes on Monday —use that day for parks, markets and churches. Sunday is free for Mexican residents at the public museums, which means queues. The city sits above 2,200 metres: take the first two days more slowly, with water and sunscreen. And from June to September it rains most afternoons, usually between 16:00 and 19:00, so save indoor visits for that window.

Where to begin. If this is a first visit, our guides to the city's museums and to the Zócalo and the Historic Centre cover the essentials; the markets are where the city looks most like itself.
