What this section covers. Five-star and Gran Turismo hotels — the top of the Mexican classification system.
Where they are, and why it decides the trip. Paseo de la Reforma is the best-connected option: the international hotel corridor, with Chapultepec at one end and the historic centre at the other, Metro line 1 and the Metrobús outside. Polanco is the polished and expensive one, next to Masaryk, the Soumaya and the Jumex. Santa Fe is the corporate option and the one to avoid unless your business is there — it has no Metro and the approach roads saturate.
What you get here that you would not elsewhere. Rooftop pools and spas looking over the Bosque de Chapultepec; restaurants that appear in the global rankings, inside the hotels themselves; and prices that remain low by European or North American standards for the same level.
What to confirm. Whether breakfast and the spa are included, parking charges, and the airport the transfer covers — MEX is inside the city, Felipe Ángeles is 45 km north and a different proposition entirely.
Practical notes. The altitude is 2,240 metres: go easy on the first evening. Tipping is 10 to 15 per cent in restaurants and often not on the bill. Book Sunday brunch ahead — it is a local institution.
