What this section covers. Three- and four-star hotels — the category most visitors actually use, with full services at a fraction of the premium price.
Where to look, by what you want. The historic centre puts you within walking distance of the Zócalo, the cathedral, the Templo Mayor and Bellas Artes, and is the best choice for a short first visit. The Roma and Condesa are leafy, walkable and dense with restaurants. The Reforma corridor is the best connected. Polanco is quieter and more expensive. And the areas around the airport and the coach terminals make sense for early departures.
What a four-star here normally includes. Breakfast, wi-fi, a lift, air conditioning, a safe, a restaurant and usually parking. Three-star hotels vary much more — ask rather than assume.
What to confirm before booking. Whether the room faces a main avenue, which is the most frequent complaint in this category; whether breakfast and parking are included; the cancellation terms; and that the hotel is where you think it is, because colonia names repeat across the city — always check the borough and postcode.
Practical notes. Tap water is not drunk; every hotel provides bottled or purified water. Check-in is usually 15:00 and check-out 12:00.
