What this section is. The complete listing of restaurants, taquerías, cantinas, cafes, bakeries and markets covered by this site, across every cuisine and every borough.
How to use a list this long. Not by browsing it. Decide first which of the four levels you want — street stall, market fonda, neighbourhood restaurant or chef-driven kitchen — then which neighbourhood you will be in. The city is too large to eat by proximity to a sight.
The neighbourhoods that carry most of it. The Roma and Juárez for the current wave; the Condesa for terraces and long breakfasts; Polanco for the formal high end; the historic centre for century-old cantinas, Spanish restaurants and rooftop views; Coyoacán for its market and cantinas; and the markets — San Juan, La Merced, Medellín — for everything else.
Rules that apply across the whole list. Lunch at 14:00, dinner from 21:00. Cash for markets and street food, cards in restaurants. Tip 10 to 15 per cent. Bottled water. Book ahead for anything well known, especially Thursday to Saturday.
