Twenty-five things, in six categories. Mexico City is too large to do in a list, so this one is split by the kind of day you want: walking, eating, nightlife, shopping, art and culture, and the strange.
To walk. 1. Ciudad Universitaria — the Central Library, the Espacio Escultórico, the lava gardens, the Islas and the MUAC, all on a World Heritage campus. 2. The Acuario Inbursa, the city's underground aquarium, with around 5,000 marine animals. 3. A viewpoint: the Torre Latinoamericana or the dome of the Monumento a la Revolución. 4. The Templo Mayor, behind the cathedral, where the Mexica city is still being excavated.
To eat. 5. Afternoon tea in one of the tea houses — Caravanserai, Casa Tassel, Zoma Tea. 6. Mexican coffee at Casa Cardinal, El Péndulo, El Jarocho, Café de Tacuba or Café La Habana. 7. A torta — at El Cuadrilátero you can order one 40 centimetres long. 8. Pre-Hispanic recipes, which a handful of kitchens in the Roma now cook seriously.
At night. 9. The 1980s never ended here: Patrick Miller, UTA Bar, El Under. 10. The cantinas of the historic centre, several of which have been open for more than a century. 11. Lucha libre at the Arena México on a Friday. 12. Mariachi at Plaza Garibaldi, negotiated per song.
To shop. 13. The Ciudadela craft market. 14. La Lagunilla on a Sunday, for antiques. 15. The Mercado de San Juan, where the chefs buy. 16. Design shops in the Roma and Polanco.
Art and culture. 17. The National Museum of Anthropology. 18. Rivera's murals in the Palacio Nacional. 19. The Frida Kahlo Museum — book online, it sells out. 20. The Palacio de Bellas Artes. 21. Luis Barragán's house-studio, by appointment.
And the strange. 22. Xochimilco by trajinera, and the Isla de las Muñecas. 23. The Mercado de Sonora. 24. A pulquería. 25. Sunday on a car-free Paseo de la Reforma.
