in detail

How much of this city is free. More than almost any comparable capital — and not as a concession, but because the public culture here was built to be open.

Free every day. The Zócalo and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Diego Rivera's murals in the Palacio Nacional, which tell the whole history of Mexico and cost nothing to see with photo identification. The Bosque de Chapultepec and its zoo. The Museo Soumaya and the Museo Jumex, side by side in Polanco. Ciudad Universitaria, a World Heritage campus, with O'Gorman's mosaic library and the Espacio Escultórico on the lava field. The Alameda Central, laid out in 1592.

Free on certain days. Almost every public museum admits residents free on Sundays — which is why Sunday is the most crowded day of the week. Noche de Museos, on the last Wednesday of most months, keeps dozens open until 22:00 at free or reduced entry.

Free every Sunday morning. Paseo de la Reforma closes to traffic for cyclists, runners and open-air exercise classes, from the centre out to Chapultepec.

And what costs almost nothing. The Metro, at one of the lowest flat fares in the world. The Cablebus, which gives the best views in the city for a transport ticket. Lucha libre. And comida corrida in a market fonda.
