in detail

Where it is and why it exists. The Planetario Luis Enrique Erro stands in the north of the city, on the Instituto Politécnico Nacional campus at Zacatenco. It opened in 1967, in the wake of Sputnik and the start of the space age, as the first planetarium of its kind in Mexico.

What you see. Regardless of the weather — which matters in a city with this much haze — the dome shows the stars of the northern hemisphere, the planets, the Moon, galaxies and black holes. The programme mixes astronomy shows with exhibitions and talks.

The refit. A 27-million-peso renovation installed a Digistar 6 projector, capable of ultra-high-resolution imaging, and replaced the seating with reclining seats that put you flat on your back under the dome. The result is regularly described as the most modern planetarium in Latin America.

Who it suits. Families with children, and anyone with an afternoon in the north of the city. Shows last around 45 minutes and are in Spanish.

Practical notes. Mornings are the quieter slot; weekends and school holidays fill up. Metro Politécnico, line 5, is the nearest station. Check the show times and the current programme before travelling, since screenings run to a fixed timetable rather than continuously.
