What this section covers. Things to do with children across the city, from the obvious to the ones local families actually use.
The reliable full days. Chapultepec — free zoo, lake with pedal boats, castle, and the Papalote Museo del Niño designed around touching everything. Xochimilco and a trajinera, hired by the boat and by the hour rather than per person. Both are reachable by public transport and both fill a day without a car.
The half-days. The Planetario Luis Enrique Erro, refitted with a Digistar projector and reclining seats. The Acuario Inbursa, an underground aquarium in Polanco. The Museo del Juguete Antiguo, four floors of obsessive collecting. KidZania, a miniature city where children take adult jobs. And Six Flags México on the Ajusco road, the largest amusement park in Latin America.
What costs almost nothing. The public deportivos, the Cablebus — which children treat as a ride and which gives the best views in the city — and weekend children's theatre, which runs on Saturday and Sunday mornings across the city at low prices.
Practical notes. Under-fives travel free on public transport. June to September it rains most afternoons, so do the outdoor thing in the morning. Most museums close on Mondays.
