in detail

Where the name comes from. Cuauhtémoc was the last tlatoani of Tenochtitlan. The name joins the Nahuatl words cuauhtli, eagle, and temoc, descends —an image of the setting sun, the eagle coming down.

What the borough holds. This is where the remains of the Mexica city are concentrated, and with them most of what visitors come for: archaeological sites, historic buildings and museums across the Historic Centre, plus Paseo de la Reforma, the Zona Rosa, Roma, Condesa, Juárez, Santa María la Ribera and Tabacalera. In practical terms, if you are staying in Mexico City for a few days, you will probably sleep and walk inside this borough.

The borough seat. The building itself serves residents rather than visitors: civil registry, citizen information, complaints and social support are handled here, and the esplanade hosts cultural, musical and civic events. It is on Calle Aldama, in Buenavista, next to the Buenavista transport hub where the suburban train, metro Line B and Metrobús Line 4 meet.
