What it is. This is one of the nine boat landings in Xochimilco. From here the trajineras set out for a trip through the canals, with food and music available on board, and the landing holds the Distintivo Moderniza quality certification.
How the pricing works. The fare varies by season and is agreed directly with the boatman —and here is the part that saves arguments: the rate is per boat per hour, not per person, so a group splits one fare. Mariachi or marimba on board is charged separately. Agree the price, the duration and the route before you step on, and bring cash.
Which landing to choose. San Cristóbal is one of the quieter ones, which suits anyone who wants the canals without the party atmosphere of Nativitas. For ecological routes towards the working chinampas and the axolotl refuges, Cuemanco is the one to pick; for food and music, Nativitas.
Getting there. On Calle Rayito, Barrio de San Cristóbal, Xochimilco. Take the Tren Ligero from Tasqueña to the Xochimilco terminus and a short taxi from there. Weekday mornings are the calmest; weekends are busy from midday.
