Blvd Adolfo Ruíz Cortinez, Periférico Sur N/A, Col. Barrio 18. 16034, Xochimilco
What it is. One of the embarcaderos where the trajineras —the flat, wooden, brightly painted boats— set out into the canals of Xochimilco, the last working remnant of the lake system the Mexica built their city on, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cuemanco opened on 5 June 1993 and was conceived as the ecological landing: from here you can ask your boatman to head for the core zone of the lake, the best-preserved stretch of the whole network.
Why choose this one. Because it is the quiet option. The central embarcaderos are party water —speakers, floating mariachi, trajinera traffic. From Cuemanco you can be among herons and chinampas within twenty minutes, pass working flower farms, and reach the ajolotarios where the axolotl is bred. For birds and silence, come early on a weekday.
Practical notes. Open 08:00–22:00. Boats are hired by the hour at an official rate per trajinera, not per person —agree the price and the route before boarding, and pay at the end. Bring cash, a hat and warm layers for late afternoon. The Cuemanco flower and plant market is next door, and Periférico Sur is the access road; by public transport, Tren Ligero to Xochimilco then a taxi.
