Mexican wrestling venues
What it is. A combination that only makes sense in Mexico City: a visit to a mezcalería followed by a lucha libre fight night at the Arena México, with transport from colonia Juárez included.
Why the two go together. Mezcal is sipped, not shot, and it is the drink around which a certain kind of Mexico City evening is built. Lucha libre — masks, storylines, families in the stands, a tradition going back to the 1930s — is the loudest and most purely enjoyable night out in the city, and it needs no Spanish to follow. Doing them in that order, with someone handling the transport, removes the two things that usually go wrong: finding a mezcalería worth the name, and getting to and from the Arena.
When it runs. Every two or three months, on Friday evenings, with dates announced on the organiser's own channels. It can also be arranged privately for a group on request.
Practical notes. Departure from colonia Juárez; the Arena México is in colonia Doctores, which is a reason to take the organised transport rather than walking. Book ahead — places are limited and the dates are irregular. Bring cash for drinks and for the masks sold outside the Arena.
