What this section covers. New Year's Eve dinner packages — a fixed-date category where booking ahead is not optional.
How 31 December works here. Restaurants and hotels sell set menus for the night, usually fixed price and often including a cover, a bottle and a midnight toast. They sell out weeks in advance, and walk-in dining is close to impossible in the central neighbourhoods.
The customs worth knowing. Twelve grapes at midnight, one for each chime and each a wish. Family dinner is the main event and starts late — often after 22:00. The traditional table runs to bacalao, romeritos and pavo rather than anything light. And fireworks are set off from streets and rooftops across the whole city rather than from one official site.
Where the public celebration is. The Zócalo, which the city usually programmes with music and installations through late December, and Paseo de la Reforma. Both are free and both are crowded.
Practical notes. Book the dinner weeks ahead and confirm what the price covers — drinks are frequently extra. Transport on the night is scarce and expensive: arrange the return before you go out. Prices and validity change; confirm with the operator.
