What this section covers. Single-day excursions from Mexico City — which is the category most visitors underuse, because the valley and the states around it hold a remarkable amount within three hours' drive.

The classic four. Teotihuacán, an hour north: the city whose builders the Mexica never knew, already a thousand-year ruin when they found it and named it "the place where the gods were born". Puebla and Cholula, two hours east: a World Heritage centre, talavera, mole and the largest pyramid in the world by volume. Taxco, the colonial silver town built down a hillside. And Tepoztlán, under a cliff with a pyramid on top of it.

Seasonal. The monarch butterfly sanctuaries, roughly November to March, where tens of millions of butterflies overwinter in the fir forests of Michoacán and the State of Mexico — a long day, and worth every hour of it.

The decision that matters. Any of these can be done independently by first-class coach from the Norte, TAPO or Taxqueña terminals, cheaply and comfortably. A package buys you timings, transfers and a guide — which is worth it for Teotihuacán and the sanctuaries, and arguably not for Puebla.

Practical notes. Leave before 08:00. Confirm what is included and the return time.
