What this section covers. Packages that go beyond Mexico City into the surrounding metropolitan area and the states around it — which is where some of the best single days from the capital are.
North. Teotihuacán, an hour away, one of the largest cities of the ancient world and already a ruin when the Mexica found it. Tula, in Hidalgo, with its colossal Toltec atlantes. And the pulque haciendas of the Hidalgo plains.
East. Puebla, two hours away: a World Heritage centre, the Capilla del Rosario, talavera and the cooking that produced mole poblano and chiles en nogada. Cholula, fifteen minutes further, with the largest pyramid in the world by volume and a church on top of it.
South. Cuernavaca, the "city of eternal spring"; Tepoztlán, under a cliff with a pyramid on it; and Taxco, the silver town built down a hillside.
West. Valle de Bravo, on a lake, and the monarch butterfly sanctuaries from November to March.
Practical notes. All are reachable by first-class coach from the Norte, TAPO, Taxqueña or Observatorio terminals. Leave before 08:00 for anything beyond the valley. Confirm prices and validity with the operator.
