Hotel-Motel Nuevo Laredo

What it is. An economical, functional two-star hotel on a busy street in colonia Vallejo, in the north of the city. The rooms are plain, with free wi-fi, television and a private bathroom with hot and cold water. The nearest bus stop is three minutes on foot.

Where it puts you. About 4 km from the Basilica of Guadalupe and 5 km from the Plaza de las Tres Culturas at Tlatelolco — which between them are the two reasons to stay in this part of the city. The Basilica is the most visited Catholic shrine in the Americas; Tlatelolco layers a Mexica ceremonial centre, a colonial church and 1960s housing on one square, and holds the Memorial del 68.

What you have to accept. Vallejo is an industrial and residential district with no tourist offering, and the historic centre is 30 to 45 minutes away depending on traffic. At night, take an app taxi to the door.

What to confirm. Whether there is hot water and at what hours, whether they take cards, and whether the room faces the street. Ask about the deposit and the check-in time.
