Take 9 hours

in detail

What the day covers. A full-day guided tour of the south of the city built around two artists and one lake: Coyoacán, the Rivera and Kahlo studio houses, Ciudad Universitaria and Xochimilco. Eight to nine hours, with certified guides and transport.

The route. It starts in the centre of Coyoacán: the parish church, the Plaza Bicentenario with the coyote fountain, and the Jardín Hidalgo, where the borough building is the place Frida and Diego married for the second time. Then the Casas Gemelas — the twin studio houses Juan O'Gorman built in 1931, one red, one blue, joined by a rooftop bridge, and the first modernist house in Mexico. Then Ciudad Universitaria, with the murals of O'Gorman, Rivera and Siqueiros on a World Heritage campus. And finally an hour on a trajinera in Xochimilco, on what is left of the lake the Mexica built their city on.

What is included. Transport, certified guides, traveller insurance, the hour on the water, the walking tours and admission to the Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo.

What is not. Food and drink — and, importantly, the Frida Kahlo Museum. If you want the Casa Azul, buy that ticket yourself in advance on the museum's own site; it sells out, and the operator takes no responsibility for entry.

Practical notes. Runs Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, normally starting at 09:00 with hotel pick-up. Comfortable shoes; Coyoacán and the campus are both walked. Confirm the current price and the pick-up time when booking.
