in detail

What it is. A guided cantina crawl through the historic centre, five hours on a Saturday afternoon and evening, mixing drinking with games, costumed characters and a running commentary on the history of the cantina in Mexico.

The history behind it. Mexico's emblematic drink was pulque, consumed by Mexica priests long before the Spanish arrived with wine and, later, beer. Waves of migration and the nineteenth-century wars with the United States and France filled the centre with taverns; at their height more than a hundred cantinas operated in these streets. Fewer than twenty of the old ones are left, which is the point of the tour.

What is included. Four historic cantinas with an explanation at each, two tequila tastings, one mezcal with worm salt, one pulque, cantina snacks, a game of rayuela with a bottle for the winner, a piñata, masked cantina lucha libre and karaoke.

Practical notes. It starts on Calle 5 de Febrero #71, in the historic centre, a few minutes from Metro Zócalo-Tenochtitlan and Isabel la Católica. Groups of six get a free extra place, and the same format is run privately for birthdays and company events. Confirm the current price and the language of the guide when booking: the commentary is normally in Spanish.
