in detail

What it offers. Private, small-group walking tours of Mexico City for travellers who want a closer reading of the place than a coach tour gives. The operator's emphasis is on the guides themselves: selected for knowledge, for the ability to put what you are looking at into a wider context, and for working comfortably in English — which is not a given in this city.

What that means in practice. A guide who can answer why there are so many barrel-organ players in the historic centre, or whether the Mexica ever met the Maya, but who also knows when to stop talking. The pace and feel of the walk matter as much as the quantity of fact.

Who it suits. Anyone on a first visit who wants the centre explained properly, and anyone with a specific interest — architecture, design, food, muralism — who wants the route built around it rather than a fixed itinerary.

Practical notes. Tours depart from Isabel la Católica 30, in the historic centre, a few minutes from Metro Zócalo-Tenochtitlan and Isabel la Católica. Agree the route, duration, group size and price when you book, and confirm the meeting point the day before.
