What this is. An official tourist information module at the Museo de Arte Popular, in the historic centre — free, staffed and selling nothing. Maps, transport routes and verified opening hours for anywhere in the city.
Where it puts you. The MAP occupies a 1928 art deco building that was originally the city's fire station, a block from the Alameda Central. Inside is the best collection of Mexican folk art in the country: alebrijes, talavera, textiles, lacquer, Day of the Dead work and the árboles de la vida from Metepec, organised by material rather than by region.
The one date to ask about. The museum organises the annual Desfile de Alebrijes Monumentales, when enormous papier-mâché creatures are paraded along Paseo de la Reforma and then displayed on the avenue for several weeks. It normally runs in October; the module will have the current dates.
Practical notes. Revillagigedo #11, Centro. Metro Juárez, line 3, and Bellas Artes, lines 2 and 8. The museum closes on Mondays. Its shop is one of the few places where provenance and fair pricing of crafts are reliable.
