What it is. A substantial community cultural centre in Jardín Balbuena, in Iztacalco, on Lázaro Pavia. It does a great deal for a neighbourhood venue: galleries, an art cinema, workshops and classes, and a hall used for concerts and events, all aimed at the residents of the surrounding colonias.
Why it is worth knowing about. The art cinema in particular. Repertory and independent film is concentrated in a handful of venues in the centre and the south of the city, and this is one of the few places in the eastern boroughs where it is programmed at all —at neighbourhood prices.
Practical notes. Open daily 08:00–20:00, with free or very low-cost entry to most activities. Programming is local and announced locally rather than months in advance, so call the number listed to ask what is on before making the trip. Jardín Balbuena is well connected: metro Balbuena and Boulevard Puerto Aéreo on Line 1, and Fray Servando on Line 4, are all nearby, and the airport is fifteen minutes away.
