in detail

National Herbarium of Mexico (MEXU) is the biggest in the country and Latin America, it custodies the most important Mexican plant’s collection, with more than a 1,300000 samples. It is considered one of the ten most active herbaria in the world due to its mobility and species inclusion.

This collection is the result of the fieldwork research botanists and national as well as international explorers do. Its history starts at the end of XIX century, when Medical National Institute was founded, in 1888,  as an official institution responsible for the integration of knowledges about natural resources. It was 1915, when the herbarium consilidated, but it was not until 1929 when National Autonomous University of Mexico, through Biology Institute, acquired the herbarium’s custidy.
