What it is. A simple, inexpensive two-star hotel on Calzada de Tlalpan, in Colonia Country Club on the Coyoacán side of the city. Rooms cover the basics for a good night's sleep and nothing more —this is budget accommodation for travellers who want a bed in the south rather than a hotel experience.

Why the location works. Calzada de Tlalpan is one of the main north-south arteries, and Metro General Anaya (Line 2) is close, with Taxqueña —the terminal for buses to Cuernavaca, Puebla and the south, and for the Tren Ligero to Xochimilco— a few minutes further. From here the National Museum of Interventions in the old Churubusco convent, the Museum of the Army and Air Force, Parque Masayoshi Ohira and the Mexico City Country Club are all within a short ride, and the centre of Coyoacán is about fifteen minutes away.

What to check before booking. At this price level, ask specifically about hot water, a room away from the avenue —Tlalpan is noisy all night— and whether parking is included. Rooms are paid in cash at many hotels in this category, so confirm whether cards are accepted.
