Culhuacan: sanctuary and murals

imagine...

It’s one of those magical places. Culhuacan, located on the slopes of Cerro de la Estrella, was an important religious and ceremonial center in pre-Hispanic Mexico. The New Fire ritual was held there. And it was here that first the Franciscan and then the Augustinian monks decided to settle to go on their evangelizing mission in the New Spain.

Go inside and learn more about the superb San Juan Evangelista Convent, one of those undiscovered gems in Mexico City. A pool with fountains greets you. When you enter the cloister, the silence will overwhelm you. Look at the beauty and geometry of the arcades. Walk the aisles and go upstairs. Only the monks were allowed to enter here and a surprise awaits you: the exquisite murals painted on the walls. You can perceive the hand of tlacuilo (the Indian artist) here. Proceed into the corridor and imagine how the monks lived, a restored cell will help you.

On this floor there is a small museum with pieces from pre-Hispanic times discovered in the surrounding area, as well as the history of the convent and photographs of its restoration. Do not miss it.

When in Culhuacan, visit the Divino Salvador del Calvario Chapel. The Lord of the Entombment is the subject of great devotion in the population. It is believed that the image was found by some quarry workers in a cave.
