What this section covers. Sport in Mexico City, which means three things above all: football, lucha libre and the Grand Prix.
Football. The Estadio Azteca, where the 1970 and 1986 World Cup finals were played, holds Club América and the national team. Pumas play at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, a 1952 building with a Diego Rivera relief over the entrance and a World Heritage listing. Cruz Azul is the third of the city's big clubs. League matches run most weekends from July to May.
Lucha libre. The Arena México on Fridays and the Arena Coliseo on Saturdays: masks, storylines, families in the stands and a tradition that goes back to the 1930s. It is cheap, it is loud and it is the most purely enjoyable evening out in the city.
Formula 1. The Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, normally in late October, reached directly by Metro line 9.
Practical notes. Buy from official channels. For the Azteca and the Autódromo use public transport: the car parks empty very slowly.
