Art exhibitions in Mexico City

What this section covers. Exhibitions across a city that holds more museums than almost anywhere in the world — around 170 of them, second only to London by most counts.

Where the major shows happen. The Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes takes the large international retrospectives. The MUAC, at the UNAM, is the most serious contemporary space in the country. The Museo Jumex in Polanco, with free entry, and the Museo Tamayo in Chapultepec cover contemporary art; the Museo de Arte Moderno holds the twentieth-century Mexican collection, including Las dos Fridas. MUNAL covers everything up to 1954.

The smaller circuit. The galleries of the Roma and Polanco, the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso for historic muralism, and the Palacio de Cultura Banamex, whose free exhibitions sit inside an eighteenth-century baroque palace on Madero.

Practical notes. Nearly every museum closes on Mondays and is free on Sundays for residents, which makes Sunday the busiest day. Admission is low everywhere. Check current exhibitions before travelling for a specific one.
