What this section covers. Lectures, conferences, seminars, calls for entries and academic programmes — the part of the city's cultural life that runs through its universities and institutes rather than its theatres.
Why it matters here. The UNAM is one of the largest universities in the Americas, and its Ciudad Universitaria campus is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Most of what it programmes — public lectures, concerts at the Sala Nezahualcóyotl, exhibitions at the MUAC, film at the Filmoteca — is open to anyone and either free or very cheap. El Colegio de México, the IPN, the UAM and the Colegio Nacional work the same way.
What else appears here. Public competitions and grant calls from the Secretaría de Cultura and its institutes: literature prizes, photography competitions, residencies and production grants, each with its own deadline and rules.
Practical notes. Events are announced with short notice and almost always in Spanish. Deadlines for calls for entries are strict. Check the institution's own channels for the current programme rather than relying on a listing.
