Who the name commemorates. The Saint Patrick's Battalion was a unit of foreign soldiers — mostly Irish immigrants who had enlisted in the United States army — who deserted and fought on the Mexican side during the US invasion of 1846–1848. Those captured at Churubusco were tried and most were hanged. In Mexico they are remembered as defenders; it is one of the few military honours in the city given to foreigners.
What the centre is. A public sports complex in Álvaro Obregón, with facilities for team sports, running and family use, charging the token fees that public deportivos charge. It is used by the neighbourhood, not by visitors.
What is beside it. The Teatro de la Juventud and the borough offices of Álvaro Obregón stand next door, which makes this a civic rather than a residential corner.
Where to follow the history up. The Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, in the ex-convent of Churubusco in Coyoacán, covers the 1847 battle where the battalion was captured and the foreign interventions in Mexico as a whole. It is one of the most interesting and least visited museums in the city.
Practical notes. Escuadrón 201 s/n, Primera Victoria, Álvaro Obregón. No Metro immediately nearby; Tacubaya and Barranca del Muerto are the usual approaches, with a short taxi ride.
